We love being able to share with you how you can heal your furry friends in such a safe, simple, holistic way. Turmeric can be used in conjunction with traditional medicines in most cases with no complications - of course you must let your Vet know if you are combining Turmeric in with their prescribed medication. Turmeric can be:Added directly to foodGiven orally through a syringeUsed as a poultice and applied directly to an injury or wound. WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO FEED TURMERIC TO AN ANIMAL? This depends on:What kind of animal you’re giving it to,how big the animal is,and what the exact purpose of using the Turmeric is. We are huge fans of Australian vet and holistic animal healer, Dr. Doug English. There is so much great information on his website, check for his link at the end of this blog post. Dr. English advises to start out with just a little bit, with smallies like cats, small dogs, rabbits, etc. Begin with 1/8 of a teaspoon, increasing the dosage as your animal tolerates it and responds to the medicinal properties. An important thing to remember about Turmeric is that it must be mixed with a little Ground Black Pepper and Coconut Oil (or other high-quality fat) to increase its absorption. ‘Golden Paste’ is one of the favorite ways that most people add Turmeric to their pets’ diet on a daily basis. With Dr English’s permission, we have borrowed directly from his website, to share this recipe, that can be used for humans and animals. GOLDEN PASTE INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup (125 ml / 60g) turmeric powder1 cup water (250 ml) plus 1 cup of water extra in reserve, if needed2 - 3 teaspoons freshly cracked black pepper1/3 cup (70 ml) coconut oil (use raw, unrefined, cold-pressed)OR linseed oil (flaxseed)OR olive oil (use virgin / extra virgin) GOLDEN PASTE RECIPE: 1) Bring the turmeric and water to a boil in a saucepan, then lower heat and simmer until you have a thick paste. This should take about 7-10 minutes and you may need to add the extra water along the way for good consistency. 2) Add the freshly cracked pepper and oil AFTER cooking, when it has been removed from heat and cooled down (still warm to touch but not burning), about 10 minutes later. 3) Stir in well to mix the oil in everywhere and allow to cool again (if coconut oil is hard, it should melt in the mixture). Do not cheat and use pre-made pepper meal, it is best to use freshly cracked pepper for much better effect. Do not add honey or any sweeteners, that will ruin the actual benefits. Humans start with 1/4 of a teaspoon, twice a day (with food and water), and build up to 3 - 4 times a day, past a few weeks of eating turmeric and finding effects. Animals start with 1/8 of a teaspoon. Full credit to this excellent, forward-thinking vet for the recipe above! Find the link to the extended recipe notes at the end of this blog.
