Up until now, our articles about Turmeric have focused on all of the different ways that this super spice helps our inner bodies heal, stay free from inflammation, resist cancer and other debilitating illnesses, and have better immune function.
All of these actions take place inside our bodies.
But there’s more!
We haven’t yet looked at how Turmeric helps the outside of our bodies…our skin.
Ingesting Turmeric in our diets and/or with supplements does already help our skin, because everything we put into our bodies affects the condition and health of our skin. In fact, you can tell a lot about your own health by looking at your hair, nails and skin condition.
What you see on the outside is a great indication of how healthy you are on the inside!
The Largest Organ We Have Is…
Our skin…Did you realize that?
Our skin is so large, that it takes up about 20 square feet of space!
It is also our fastest growing organ.
Our skin protects our body’s insides from disease, injury, keeps our body temperature regulated, helps to hold our muscles in place, keeps out water, and helps us to sense things through the nerves in our skin. It’s an amazing creature!
As our skin is basically a nice big coat over our inner body that has the first contact with our environment – it can really take a beating.
Some of the causes for skin issues stem from toxins in our environment are caused by:
- Cars and public transit systems
- Manufacturing businesses
- Pesticides that are sprayed over large crops
- Toxins from bug sprays
- Pollutants from airplanes
- Laundry soaps and fabric softeners
- Dry-cleaning chemicals
- Chemicals in make-up, skin and hair care products
- Allergic reactions to prescription medications
- Food allergies
- Processed foods
- White Sugar & Flour
- Preservatives and additives
- Food with GMO’s in them
- Non-organic produce
- Soft drinks
- Too much alcohol
- Sun damage
When our bodies are overloaded with these toxins, our skin reacts in specific ways.
- Acne and/or sudden break outs on different areas of your body
- Dry and flaking skin
- Eczema and Psoriasis
- Skin Cancers
The exciting news is that using Turmeric topically on your skin brings a sea of benefits to combat environmental damage; especially from the Sun!
Turmeric has been scientifically proven to lighten and even help prevent dark spots on your skin.
That’s right! Eating and applying Turmeric to your skin targets the dark spots on our skin from sun damage and other causes, and not only lightens them up, but also prevents them from occurring in the future!
Melasma is the term for those dark spots that appear in random shapes and in different places on our body; specifically on our face and hands.
Melasma is caused by:
- Over-exposure to the Sun <—this is the leading cause of Malasma!
- Hormonal changes
- Hormonal medications
- Thyroid Disease
- Vitamin D deficiency
These dark spots occur a lot more the older we get. You can tell that by all of the anti-aging skin products that are being sold that specifically target dark spots and offer different ways to bleach them; although they use chemicals to do that!
More, there are toxic preservatives in most skin lightening remedies that cause all kinds of other issues for our skin; including allergic rashes, acne breakouts, and clogged pores.
Plus, we’re absorbing all of that through our skin, into our inner system. Yuk!
There is a much better way to tackle Melasma, with proven results, and no side effects…Turmeric!
Turmeric is the most natural and effective way to treat Malasma.
First, what Turmeric does for your skins’ health overall is:
- Remove dead skin cells
- Clear pores and reduce inflammation
- Clears acne
- Reduces the growth of facial hair
- Improves skin elasticity
- Reduces acne scars
- Lightens dark spots
- Reduces Melanin production <—this is what causes the dark spots
Just How Does Turmeric Lighten Melasma?
Curcumin, the main active ingredient in Turmeric, is responsible for reducing and prohibiting the production of Melanin, the substance that causes our dark spots.
Turmeric was tested in 2 different studies and on 80 different patients that were being treated for Melasma.
Some patients received a cream with Hydroquinone in it, and the others received a cream with Turmeric compounds in it. (Hydroquinone is a compound that has been banned by the FDA in the U.S. because it cannot be ruled out as a carcinogenic. It is used in skin lightening creams and ointments).
- The first study showed using the Turmeric and the Hydroquinone had equal results, but the Turmeric results were achieved without the side effects of the chemical toxins in the Hydroquinone.
- The second study showed that using Turmeric greatly reduced Melanin levels, and that these levels continued to decrease throughout the study. (source)
- *Yet another study showed that Turmeric/Curcumin specifically prohibited the production of Melanin: it does this by basically preventing messages getting to the proteins that create the pigmentation in our skin. (source)
Turmeric applied directly to your skin results in:
- no side effects
- a reduction in the Melanin in our sun/dark spots that we already may have
- the prohibition of Melanin production in our bodies, which prevents future dark spots
What’s the Best Way to Apply Turmeric to Your Skin?
One of the best ways is to mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric with some coconut oil, and apply to your face as a cleansing moisturizer. Just leave it on for about 10 – 15 minutes, then rinse off.
Other ingredients that are great for your skin and mix well with Turmeric are; milk, honey, egg whites, French clay, avocados, bananas, or any other natural and organic item you use for face masks.
The key is, to mix in a small amount, (starting with ¼ teaspoon is perfect) with your favourite other goodies into a perfect paste (you’ll need to experiment a bit to find what suits your own personal preferences here) that you pat on clean dry skin, and leave on anywhere from 5 – 15 minutes.
Try doing this several times a week, and give it at least 30 – 60 days to see a difference in your dark spots.
*Keep including Organic Turmeric in your diet as well when you are using it topically on your face!
*Be Aware: Do note, that if you leave it on longer than 15 minutes, it can stain your skin a little yellowish colour! If this happens, you can use a gentle sugar scrub to remove the leftover colouring from your skin. This is why it’s good to start using it for short periods of time to begin with…and increase your amounts as your skin tone evens out and adapts to its new glow.
In a time when we’re all eating better, taking better care of our Earth, and loving ourselves and each other more, Turmeric for your skin is a great addition to support your Living!
Not only does Turmeric lighten dark spots with no side effects and prevent future Melanin growth; it also reduces redness and puffiness, fights off bacteria and viruses, eliminates acne and reduces scarring, as well as creating a more youthful and vibrant glow in your skin.
With so many great reasons to use Turmeric daily that we know about already, this is one is especially important and useful to those that love the Sun and being outdoors, and want to prevent any possible conditions or diseases that could manifest later on due to overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
So pack your sunscreen (natural of course) and your Turmeric, head on outside and have fun!
